A 78-year-old male is seen in the acute medical unit (AMU), having been admitted with a seizure. He reports feeling unwell over the past few days, with a fever and rigors. He has a past medical history of hypercholesterolaemia, for which he takes a statin. He has recently returned from a holiday to India. On examination, he appears jaundiced. His observations reveal hypotension and oliguria. Giemsa-stained thick and thin blood smears show Plasmodium falciparum species and high levels of parasitaemia.
