A 65 year old man is brought into A&E by his daughter. She was visiting him at home and found that he was acting and making strange flinging movements with his left arm and leg. She last saw him three days ago and reported that he was behaving normally at the time. When she called him 4 hours ago before she had arrived at his house, he had sounded calm and was responding as usual. On examination his speech is slurred and appears very distressed. His comprehension seems to be intact but he cannot vocalise full words. He has no known medical conditions and is an ex-smoker of 30 years. He is normally fully independent. What is your next step?
