A 32-year-old female is admitted to hospital following a 4-day history of numbness in both her arms and legs. She is unable to walk. Similar episodes have occurred twice in the past. She remains in hospital for several weeks and following investigation, is treated for transverse myelitis. Six weeks following the onset of her symptoms, she develops a painful calf. On examination, the right calf appears swollen and is warm to touch. Her neurological examination reveals no new abnormalities.
