A 12-year old boy presents to hospital following the onset of multiple blistering ulcers

A 12-year old boy presents to hospital following the onset of multiple blistering ulcers, affecting the inside of his mouth, which are very painful. The skin of his lips is reddened and peeling. He also complains of sores on his penis. The lesions were first noticed the previous day and he has not been able to eat and drink due to the discomfort. He is generally fit and well, but has been complaining of a fever and sore throat in the past few days and his mother says he has not been himself. On examination there are several small round lesions on his back, consisting of central vesicles surrounded by erythematous rings. There are no lesions elsewhere on his body and you estimate around 5% of his body is affected.
