A 25-year-old male and 26-year-old female present as a couple to their GP with concerns over infertility. They have been regularly trying for a child over the past year and have not had any luck. The female reports regular periods throughout this time, and no past medical history. The male reports no problem with erectile function, but he sometimes feels he is not able to ‘perform’ as often as he would like, claiming that they only have successful intercourse once a week. In terms of past medical history, there are no infections or previous surgical history for the male, however he believes he has nasal polyps as he has never been able to smell well.
As the GP you suspect there may be male-factor infertility so decide to take a serum LH, FSH, and testosterone from the male. The results are as follows:
| Hormone | Results | Normal Values |
|---|---|---|
| LH | 0.2 | 5–20 mIU/mL |
| FSH | 0.5 | 5–20 mIU/mL |
| Testosterone | 5 | 10–35 nmol/L |
