The stroke team sees a 58-year-old woman in A&E. She was found by her partner at home collapsed on the floor with left-sided weakness and having been incontinent of urine and faeces. Her past medical history includes hypertension and alcohol dependency. On examination, she is tachycardic, tremulous, dysarthria, and left arm and leg weakness. She is unable to give a history of events preceding her hospital admission. Her partner reports that she has been abstinent from alcohol for the past three days, having previously been drinking a bottle of spirits a day. Her CT brain is reported as normal.
