A 37-year-old woman attends A&E with a 4-day history of left-sided abdominal pain. She describes a constant severe ache, which is “getting worse”. Over the past day, she has felt feverish and been experiencing rigors. She is also having dysuria. Her past medical history is significant for a background of duplex kidneys. She reports no vaginal discharge or bleeding. On examination, her left loin is tender. Urinalysis is positive for leukocytes and nitrites, and a pregnancy test is negative. Bloods show increased inflammatory markers.
An ultrasound of the renal tract shows a renal abscess approximately 3.5 cm in size.
