A 74 year old presents with an 8 day history of progressively worsening fevers, palpitations, fatigue, and joint pain. He recently returned from a trip to Ethiopia. Examination reveals a soft but generally tender abdomen and a temperature of 39.8. A rapid diagnostic test for malaria comes back positive. Blood film microscopy reveals infection with Plasmodium ovale species.
