A 27-year-old woman is brought to the psychiatric clinic by her husband, who is concerned about her symptoms lately

A 27-year-old woman is brought to the psychiatric clinic by her husband, who is concerned about her symptoms lately.

The woman has displayed periods of ‘highs’; during these episodes, she has spent significant amounts of money, does not feel the need to sleep and seems to have much more energy than usual. She denies grandiosity. She has had similar episodes in the past, which seem to resolve within a week; she has never caused harm to herself or others.

The woman has a PMH of severe depression; her last episode was over a year ago. During these episodes, she withdraws from any social interaction, feels extremely low, tends to sleep excessively, and has expressed suicidal ideation.
