Background and Presentation
Sleep apnoea syndromes are the commonest sleep-related breathing disorders. They are characterised by pauses in breathing (apnoeas) or periods of especially shallow or light breathing (hypopneas) that occur during sleep. The main syndromes are Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/ Hypopnea Syndrome and Central Sleep Apnoea.
Patients with sleep apnoea typically complain of daytime sleepiness, fatigue or low energy.
