An 83-year-old woman is re-admitted to the geriatrics ward following her discharge 2 weeks ago. Her previous admission concerned a non-syncopal fall and was complicated by a Clostridium difficile outbreak on the ward. She had subsequently developed severe diarrhoea, and tested positive and was treated for C. difficile infection with vancomycin. She has returned with bloody diarrhoea, passing 7 very loose stools a day, over the past 3 days, though she is haemodynamically stable. A stool sample is positive for C. difficile.
