A 46-year-old female presents to her GP for assessment of osteoporotic fracture risk. She has a background of Crohn’s disease and a maternal history of hip fracture. After calculating a FRAX score, her 10-year risk of developing a fragility fracture is estimated as more than 10%; therefore, she is commenced on oral alendronic acid. Unfortunately, she develops gastritis as a result. She is commenced on an IV preparation of zoledronic acid; however, she is also unable to tolerate this.
What is the mechanism of action of the second-line therapy she could be offered?
