An 82-year-old woman presents to her GP with hip pain over the last 2 months and loss of movement in the affected leg. The GP sends her off a hip x-ray which revealed osteopenia and microfractures of the femoral head, with close inspection of the image revealing a crescent shaped joint and collapse of the articular surface. A follow up MRI shows severe oedema in the femoral condyle. She has a past medical history of Addison’s disease, type 2 diabetes, and gout.
