A 6-month-old infant, previously healthy, suddenly develops vomiting, abdominal distention, and irritability. The mother mentions the baby has not had a bowel movement for the past 24 hours and usually has regular bowel movements. On examination, the baby’s abdomen is markedly distended and tympanitic to percussion. Bowel sounds are high-pitched and hyperactive. The infant grimaces with palpation of the abdomen.
