A 25-year-old football player presents with severe pain in the lower left leg after a tackle during a game. Examination reveals swelling and tenderness over the mid-shaft of the tibia. There is no open wound and the distal pulses are palpable. X-ray confirms a closed, displaced tibial shaft fracture.
