Syringomyelia

This describes a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord, generally found between C2 and T9 but sometimes extending further (syringobulbia denotes extension into the brainstem). When occurring as a congenital abnormality, it is strongly associated with Chiari I malformations. Other causes include infectious, inflammatory, traumatic, malignant, and other congenital abnormalities.
