You attend an emergency call on the ward to a patient with seizures. The patient is a 29-year-old female who was admitted under the surgical team with abdominal pain. No cause has, as yet, been identified.
Upon arrival of the medical emergency team, her seizures have terminated. The staff nurse reports that the seizure activity appeared to be tonic-clonic movements of the arms and legs, with a stiff posture and side-to-side motion of the head.
On examination, she is lying very still, and there is resistance to eye opening. She does not respond to a verbal stimulus and withdraws from painful stimuli.
