You are asked to review a patient on the surgical ward. He is a 34-year-old man with a past medical history of epilepsy who has had a seizure. His usual medication is sodium valproate monotherapy. He was admitted for an appendicectomy, which was uneventful, and he was being planned for discharge today.

Emergency measures were instituted by the surgical foundation doctor but the seizure terminated without intervention after 2 minutes. The surgical doctor reports that there was tonic-clonic activity, although it appeared to be more localised towards the left side.

The surgical doctor is concerned that, although he is postictal, the patient does not seem to be moving his right side.

Which is the single best option describing the likely prognosis of this patient’s right-sided weakness?

Select the SINGLE most appropriate option from the list below. Select ONE option only.
