Overview
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterised by persistent hyperglycemia caused by deficient insulin secretion, resistance to the action of insulin, or both. There are various classifications of diabetes. Broadly, it can be categorised into Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 (secondary diabetes), gestational diabetes, and genetic forms of diabetes (such as Wolfram syndrome, Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY)), neonatal diabetes, and autoimmune diabetes (LADA). Type 3 diabetes occurs secondary to the destruction of the pancreas due to factors such as surgery, malignancy, alcohol, medications, or genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis.
