A 30-year-old man with a background of ulcerative colitis attends the emergency department with 2 days of bloody diarrhoea. He is having 4 loose stools each day, with around a teaspoon of blood in each motion. He reports feeling tired but does not look pale, and on examination has mild abdominal pain.
His observations are all within normal ranges, and blood tests unremarkable.
