Prevention of nephrotoxicity
General steps to minimise the likelihood of nephrotoxicity include:
- Check baseline renal function & monitor as appropriate during therapy with potentially nephrotoxic medications
- If appropriate, adjust dosages to account for renal function
- Ensure patients are sufficiently hydrated and any depletion of circulating volume is restored with intravenous fluids as necessary
- Correct risk factors for nephrotoxicity where possible (e.g. treatment of sepsis, congestive cardiac failure)
- Avoid concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
- Use non-nephrotoxic alternatives when possible.
