A 60-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus presents to his local foot protection service with a non-healing ulcer on the sole of his foot. On examination, the ulcer has an irregular border and is deep but does not expose the underlying bone. It is clean, the surrounding skin is callused but there is no erythema or exudate and the patient reports no pain associated with the ulcer. His observations and blood results (including a full blood count and CRP) return as normal. What is the most appropriate initial management?
