A 56-year old woman presents with a one-month history of painful swollen gums

A 56-year old woman presents with a one-month history of painful swollen gums. Her gums are a dark red in colour and she says that they bleed easily when brushing her teeth. She also complains of foul-smelling breath, which she feels increasingly self-conscious about. On examination you notice that her teeth are yellowed and darkened in places, along with several dental fillings. She tells you that she visited the dentist around six weeks ago and had two fillings. She has been a heavy smoker since the age of 16.
