A 36-year old woman presents with a 12 hour history of visual changes. She describes seeing white ‘zig-zagging’ lines, which move across her field of vision, and occasional intermittent black patches. Several hours after she first noticed these, she developed a severe headache, which she describes as a throbbing pain worsened by light. The only thing which alleviates her symptoms is lying down in a dark room, with her eyes closed.
