Ellie M.Passed the MLA in 2026
"I watched the ENT lectures the week before that placement started, and the first week made a lot more sense. Most of them are around half an hour, so I could get through one at lunch."
Video Lectures
Amara K.Passed the MLA in 2026
"On placement I'd read the summary at the top before a clinic, then go back for the rest of the chapter that evening if I still needed it."
Online Textbook
Sofia B.Passed the MLA in 2026
"I went through my flashcards on the bus in, so I could still remember conditions we learned in third year when I sat the exam."
Flashcards
AKT
The AKT Question Bank
There are a huge number of conditions you could be tested on in the AKT. Without a structured way of working through them, it's easy to spend too long on areas you're already comfortable with while leaving gaps elsewhere, and the last place you want to find one of those gaps is in the real exam.
That's why the Question Bank contains over 10,000 questions organised by body system and condition. As you work through them you can track your progress and see where you're performing well and which areas still need work.
Once you've found those weaker areas, Adaptive Mode adjusts the difficulty of the questions you're given as you improve, so you're not always practising at the same level. You can also control how often correctly and incorrectly answered questions come back, bringing spaced repetition into your revision while you decide how often to revisit the questions you need to work on.
Video Lectures
Learn from registrars and consultants
There's a lot to learn for each condition in the MLA, and covering a topic doesn't always mean you understand it well enough to apply that knowledge to a clinical question in the real exam.
The platform includes 89 video lectures, delivered by registrars and consultants working in the relevant specialties. They help you build the clinical knowledge behind the questions, rather than relying on memorising individual answers.
Online Textbook
Read a condition end to end
If you find a particular condition more difficult and want to go into it in more depth, you can work through the relevant chapter in the Online Textbook.
Your subscription includes 224 chapters covering individual conditions, with definitions, images, videos and high-quality referencing throughout. And because everything sits on the same platform, when you spot a gap you can answer more questions, watch the relevant video lecture and work through the chapter until you're confident on that condition.
MLA Revision Platform • £40 a year
Over 10,000 AKT questions and 203 CPSA scenarios, plus 89 lectures and 224 chapters for more depth, the flashcards and ten full mock papers.
There's nothing worse than spending hours practising with mock papers, only to reach the real exam and realise they were nothing like the paper you're actually sitting. That happens when mocks aren't properly designed and are just a random selection of questions.
When building our 10 full mock papers, we carried out a detailed analysis of the official practice material: which topics were included, how many questions appeared on each, the types of questions asked, how they were written and the variation in difficulty. That means you can practise with full papers designed to be as close as possible to the real exam, so you're better prepared for what you'll face on the day.
Flashcards
Retain what you've already covered
With so much to learn for the MLA, regularly revisiting what you've already covered is just as important as learning it in the first place. You might feel you understand something when you first revise it, but it can be much harder to remember months later, and the last place you want to realise you've forgotten something is in the exam.
That's why we've included over 4,500 pre-written flashcards, with Anki's spaced repetition built into the platform. You can control how often cards reappear as you work toward the exam, helping you revisit and retain what you've learned.
CPSA Scenarios
Know exactly what examiners are looking for
One of the hardest parts of preparing for the CPSA is knowing exactly what examiners want. You can understand the scenario, but if you miss the specific actions or information needed to meet the assessment criteria, you can still drop marks.
That's why each of our 203 CPSA scenarios includes a step-by-step guide to the key points to cover, with images of key signs and procedures, so you know what to look for and how to approach each scenario in the exam.
Specific histories
Focused histories for particular presentations, with the key questions examiners expect you to ask.
General histories
Broader histories where you take a full, structured account and identify what matters.
Examinations
System examinations with the signs to elicit and present, shown with images of key findings.
Documentation
Writing clear, safe clinical records and completing the paperwork examiners assess.
Procedures
Practical procedures with the steps to follow, illustrated with images of each stage.
Interpretation
Interpreting investigations and data, and explaining what they mean for the patient.
Communication
Explaining, counselling and sharing information clearly, including the harder conversations.
Mapped to the CPSA
Each of the 203 scenarios includes a comprehensive guide to the key points examiners are looking for, with images of important signs and procedures so you know what to do at each step.
The complete MLA Revision Platform • £40 a year
Full AKT and CPSA preparation: 10,000+ AKT questions, 203 CPSA scenarios, video lectures, the Online Textbook, flashcards and 10 full mock papers, plus the Year 1 and Year 2 Question Banks for your medical school.
All UK medical students need to pass the MLA as part of their degree before joining the medical register. It has two components, and the platform prepares you for both from the same clinical knowledge.
Component
The Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)
The written component. It tests your ability to apply medical knowledge to different clinical situations, rather than simply recall facts.
Component
The Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA)
The practical component. Your medical school sets and delivers its own CPSA, so the exact format can vary between universities.
The MLA Content Map
The GMC's Content Map provides the framework for what can be assessed across both the AKT and CPSA. The version published in October 2025 applies from September 2026 and is organised into six domains: areas of clinical practice, areas of professional knowledge, clinical and professional capabilities, practical skills and procedures, patient presentations, and conditions. The Question Bank, video lectures, Online Textbook and CPSA scenarios are all mapped to this framework.

How to prepare for the MLA
With so much to cover across the AKT and CPSA, a structured approach makes your preparation much more manageable. Here's how we recommend working through it.
Start with the Content Map
Use the GMC Content Map as the framework for your revision. It sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours that can be assessed across the MLA and helps you make sure you're covering the right areas. For exams from September 2026 onwards, make sure your resources reflect the latest Content Map rather than the previous version.
Build your clinical knowledge
Before you can apply your knowledge in questions and scenarios, you need a strong understanding of the conditions you could be tested on. Use the video lectures to work through the key concepts, then go into more detail with an Online Textbook chapter when you need a deeper understanding of a particular condition.
Start answering questions early
Don't wait until you've finished learning the content before you start question practice. Answering questions early tells you whether you can recall and apply what you've learned, while there's still time to work on weaker areas. Aim for around 10 questions a day to begin with, then build towards 100 a day as the exam gets closer.
Prepare for the AKT and CPSA together
Both assessments are underpinned by the same GMC Content Map. Rather than treating them as two separate projects, build your clinical knowledge once and practise applying it in the different ways each assessment requires: written clinical questions in the AKT, and clinical skills and behaviours in the CPSA.
Practise a variety of CPSA scenarios
Your medical school sets its own CPSA, so you won't know exactly what you'll face. Make sure your practice extends beyond histories and examinations to include documentation, procedures, interpretation and communication, so you're less likely to meet a type of scenario for the first time on the day.
Make your revision more exam-like
As the exam gets closer, move from Practice Mode, where you learn from the explanation after each question, to Test Mode, where your results are held back until the end. Then use full timed mock papers to practise completing an entire AKT paper under exam conditions.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the MLA?
The Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) is an assessment that UK medical students need to pass as part of their degree before joining the medical register. It has two parts: the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA).
Is the Question Bank mapped to the September 2026 Content Map?
Yes. The AKT Question Bank, Online Textbook and CPSA scenarios are mapped to the GMC Content Map that applies to MLA assessments from September 2026 onwards.
How many MLA questions are included?
Over 10,000 AKT questions and 203 CPSA scenarios, alongside ten full AKT mock papers. The AKT questions are organised by body system and condition, so you can work through the whole syllabus or focus on specific areas.
Does one subscription cover both the AKT and CPSA?
Yes. Your £40 a year subscription includes both AKT and CPSA preparation, alongside the Online Textbook, over 4,500 flashcards, video lectures and ten full mock papers. You'll also get access to our Year 1 and Year 2 Question Banks for your medical school, which are mapped to your university's curriculum.
When should I start preparing for the MLA?
Start question practice while you're still learning the content, rather than leaving it until the end of your revision. You can begin with smaller numbers of questions alongside placement and gradually increase your practice as the exam gets closer.
Are the mock exams official papers?
No. Our mock papers are written by Medibuddy and are not official papers or endorsed by the GMC. We created them by analysing the publicly available official practice material, including its spread of topics, question types and variation in difficulty, to make them as representative as possible.
I'm using MLA resources from last year. Is that a problem?
Potentially. The GMC introduced a new Content Map for MLA assessments from September 2026 onwards, so older resources may have been built around the previous version. Check that any resources you use have been updated and mapped to the Content Map that applies to your assessment.
