A 13-year-old boy presents to his GP with knee pain

A 13-year-old boy presents to his GP with knee pain. He describes pain in the area of the left tibial tuberosity. This has gotten slowly worse over the preceding 3 months. The pain is worsened with exercise and improves with rest. He is a keen football player and plays at least 5 times per week – both in school and with his local team at weekends.

He feels generally well in himself, and there is no history of significant trauma.
