An 8-month-old is brought into hospital by his father
An 8-month-old is brought into hospital by his father. He is worried about a sudden onset swelling and redness on the palms of the child’s hands and soles of his feet. He has also been off his food and the father reports his temperature is mildly elevated. When you examine the joints, he starts crying. The baby was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia 3 months ago. He has been well since then except for a minor infection he is currently recovering from.
