A 35-year old woman presents with a sore throat
A 35-year old woman presents with a sore throat. She woke up four days ago with a dry throat, which has worsened over the past few days. It is painful to speak and to swallow, and she also has a non-productive cough which has been aggravating her symptoms. She lost her voice yesterday. The soreness has made it difficult to eat and drink, and her appetite is poor. She is a heavy smoker, smoking around 20 cigarettes a day since the age of 17, and is otherwise fit and well.
