An 83-year-old woman is admitted with urinary retention

An 83-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer is admitted with urinary retention and is treated for a urinary tract infection. Whilst awaiting discharge back to the community, she complains of reduced mobility in her legs. She is usually able to mobilise from her bed to her chair, but she is unable to do so now. Prior to admission she said she had noticed some tingling in her feet. On examination, there is no active movement bilaterally; passive movement is possible. Sensation is intact bilaterally. Both her patella reflexes are reduced. On per rectal examination, she has reduced anal sphincter tone.
