A 77-year-old man, who is recovering from a Hartmann’s procedure

A 77-year-old man, who is recovering from a Hartmann’s procedure for a perforated diverticulum, has become unwell on the ward. His past medical history includes hypertension and diverticular disease. His current medications include paracetamol, morphine (patient-controlled analgesia), amlodipine, senna, and prophylactic dalteparin. On assessment, he is found to be agitated and confused, claiming to be on holiday in France, and that it is his 50th birthday next week, so he must leave as soon as possible “so as to not miss his party”.
