A 20-year-old woman is brought to an emergency GP appointment by her mother

A 20-year-old woman is brought to an emergency GP appointment by her mother. Her mother is incredibly concerned about her behaviour over the past two weeks. Her long-term boyfriend recently ended their relationship, and since then, her daughter has been “acting crazy” – appearing to be very hyperenergetic and staying up all night playing the drums. Her mum has brought her to the doctors as the night before last she went out on her own all night partying – she had stolen her mother’s credit card and spent over £300 on alcohol. She returned at 11am the following day, refusing to say where she had spent the night.

On assessment, the daughter is notably restless and agitated and alternates between laughing at her mum and angrily accusing her of lying. She tells the GP she is “just having some fun”. Her mum also reports that her daughter has a background of “feeling low”, describing periods where she will seem to be depressed for weeks at a time. She has never previously acted like this.
