A 30-year-old retired member of the armed forces, presents with a 3-month history of repeated flashbacks of things he experienced whilst in the army. He is unable to sleep and is feeling increasingly distressed. These flashbacks are triggered by loud noises, so he avoids going out to noisy places or anywhere where there are large crowds. His GP has diagnosed him with PTSD and has referred him to outpatient psychiatry for further assessment.
