As the on-call medical SHO, you are asked by the nurses on the ward to see a 19-year-old woman who was recently admitted for refeeding on the ward. She was determined to be of a high risk of refeeding syndrome by the admitting medical team and liaison psychiatric team. She agreed to commence on a meal plan on the ward with daily blood tests; however, is now packing her bags and wants to leave. When you go to speak to the woman, she says she was “told off” for refusing to eat and “threatened with an NG tube” by the nursing team. This was triggered by being served Shepherd’s pie for the second day, and she hates the sight of the cheese served on top. She has eaten her breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
