The inferior mediastinum is subdivided into anterior, middle and posterior mediastinum. The anterior mediastinum is bordered by the sternum anteriorly and the pericardial sac posteriorly. The posterior mediastinum is bordered by the pericardial sac anteriorly and the thoracic vertebrae posteriorly.
