Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
G6PD is an X-linked recessive disorder that clinically encompasses a spectrum of haemolytic syndromes. Patients can have a normal life span and be asymptomatic however they may have episodic anaemia or haemolytic crises. Fava beans, infections and medications can precipitate a crisis.
Drugs which may cause haemolysis include sulphonamides, sulfasalazine, sulfonylureas, ciprofloxacin and primaquine.
