Definition
Pleural disease refers to pathology of the pleural space: a space which lies between the visceral and parietal pleura on the outside of the lung parenchyma but within the thoracic cavity. Pleural disease typically comes in 2 forms: pleural effusion and pneumothorax.
- Pleural effusion: increased volume of fluid within the pleural space either by increased production or reduced absorption of fluid.
- Pneumothorax: air in the pleural cavity.
