Epidemiology

Schizophrenia has an estimated prevalence of 14.5 per 1000 across all ages and populations in the UK. It usually develops in early to late adulthood and rarely before the age of 10. The average age of onset in men is between 18-25 and ages 25-35 for women, sometimes occurring with a second peak around menopause. Individuals with Schizophrenia are more likely to have other mental comorbidities such as depression, alcohol and substance misuse, personality disorder, and anxiety disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
