Background
Fibroids are benign tumours that can develop in any part of the myometrium. They typically develop in women of reproductive age as their growth is stimulated by oestrogen and progesterone. As a result, the risk factors are those associated with increased oestrogen and progesterone exposure: (1) increased age (until menopause); (2) early menarche; (3) nulliparity; (4) obesity. Fibroids are more common in women of black and Asian descent and those with a family history in a first-degree relative.
