Cryoprecipitate transfusion
The adult dose is two five-unit pools (approximately 3g fibrinogen) and should raise the fibrinogen by ~1g/L in an adult. In addition to fibrinogen, it contains Factor VIII, von Willebrand factor (VWF) and Factor XIII.
Indications include:
- Acute DIC with bleeding and fibrinogen <1.5 g/L
- Severe liver disease with bleeding
- Prophylaxis for surgery when fibrinogen <1.5 g/L
- Hypofibrinogenaemia associated with massive transfusion (where the aim is to maintain >1.5 g/L).
