Background
Stroke is defined as ‘a clinical syndrome consisting of rapidly developing signs of focal (or global) disturbance of cerebral function, lasting more than 24 hours or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than that of vascular origin.’
Identifying the underlying aetiology of the stroke is very important in order to provide appropriate treatment to reduce the risk of further events.
