A 22-year-old gentleman was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit
A 22-year-old gentleman was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit. On arrival, he was noted to be agitated, pacing up and down the corridor and resistant to any assessment. He was seen to be walking aimlessly within the hospital courtyard and, often placed himself on the floor or tables, and was seen to be responding to unseen stimuli. When he was seen in his room later in the day, he was seated upright in his bed staring aimlessly. He was mute and did not show any acknowledgement to staff entering the room. When staff attempted to lie him down in bed, he remained sitting upright; however, when asked to lift his arm, he did this automatically.
