A 29-year-old woman is seen for follow up in the gastroenterology clinic
A 29-year-old woman is seen for follow up in the gastroenterology clinic. She was referred 2 years ago with intermittent abdominal pain and variations in bowel habit, fluctuating between constipation and diarrhoea. All investigations, including full blood count, liver and renal function, coeliac serology, thyroid function, inflammatory markers, faecal calprotectin and colonoscopy, were normal. For the last 12 months she has been attempting to manage her symptoms at home with a combination of dietary changes (increasing fluid, reducing alcohol and caffeine, trial of probiotics), lifestyle changes (regular exercise, mindfulness, sleep hygiene) and mebeverine. Despite this, she feels her symptoms are much the same and would like to try something new. Her gastroenterologist refers her to a dietician.
