A 34-year-old Middle Eastern male with known HIV was recently admitted with shortness of breath

A 34-year-old Middle Eastern male with known HIV was recently admitted with shortness of breath that is worse on exertion and a non-productive cough. His recorded SpO2 was 93% at rest and 81% on exertion. Chest X-rays showed significant bilateral infiltration and were commenced on treatment.

Following treatment, he developed jaundice over 48 hours. He also noted increasingly dark urine without dysuria. His mucous membranes and eyes appear pale. His blood tests were:

Blood test Results Normal range
Haemoglobin 60 130-180 g/L
White cell count 10.0 3.5 – 11.0 x10⁹/L
Platelets 250 150-400 x10⁹/L
LDH 400 100-250 U/L
Bilirubin 130 <21μmol/L

Given the likely underlying diagnosis resulting in his deranged blood tests, what are the chances of his children developing a similar condition if his wife’s father suffers from a similar condition while her mother remains well?
