A 35-year-old previously well patient presents with a 2-week history of worsening right eye redness, watering, photophobia, foreign body sensation and, more recently, decreased vision. He has a dull ache in that eye. He has tried a course of chloramphenicol eye drops for that duration, as advised by the pharmacist, but there is no improvement. He has no past medical or ocular history of note. He has been under a lot of stress at work recently but is coping well. On examination, there is right diffuse conjunctival hyperaemia, corneal haze and a branching staining defect on the right cornea. There is limited iris detail, but pupils seem reactive to light.
