A 47 year old man presents with a 5 day history of fevers associated with palpitations, severe fatigue, and muscle and joint pain.

A 47 year old man presents with a 5 day history of fevers associated with palpitations, severe fatigue, and muscle and joint pain. He recently returned from a trip to Nigeria. Examination reveals a soft but generally tender abdomen and a temperature of 38.9, which has been fluctuating throughout the day. A rapid diagnostic test for malaria comes back positive. Blood film microscopy reveals infection with Plasmodium ovale species. He is started on treatment with artemether-lumefantrine.
