A 62-year-old retired food critic is diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus after presenting with a long history of dysphagia and weight loss. He has no past medical history and keeps active, running an average of 20km per week. He has been smoking 5 cigarettes per day for the last 15 years and drinks 20-25 units of alcohol per week. A staging CT scan reveals metastasis of the cancer to nearby lymph nodes. On discussion with him, you note that he is very distressed by his dysphagia. He has always loved gastronomy and is upset that he can no longer eat his favourite meals.
