A 67-year-old woman presents to A&E with sudden onset LIF pain, associated with multiple episodes of loose stools

A 67-year-old woman presents to A&E with sudden onset LIF pain, associated with multiple episodes of loose stools. She thinks there might be some blood mixed in with the stools. Diarrhoea is unusual for her, as she has a history of long-standing constipation. On examination, her LIF is tender. Bowel sounds are present. PR examination shows blood stained faeces but no palpable masses. She is tachycardic and pyrexial, and has raised inflammatory markers on her blood tests.
