A 69-year-old man with a history of alcohol dependence recently underwent unplanned alcohol withdrawal during an unexpected 2-week hospital admission for chest pain due to left-sided rib fractures that occurred after he fell down his stairs. He has been assessed as physio-safe and is due to go home today with some antibiotics to complete for a hospital-acquired pneumonia and a short-term supply of Oramorph, which he is using 2-3 times a day. He is keen to try to continue to abstain from alcohol moving forwards and would like to know if there is any medication he could be given to help with this. What would be the best pharmacological management to prescribe to help support his abstinence from alcohol?
