A 71-year-old plumber is referred to the 2-week-wait lung cancer clinic after presenting to his GP with significant unintentional weight loss, cough and haemoptysis.

A 71-year-old plumber is referred to the 2-week-wait lung cancer clinic after presenting to his GP with significant unintentional weight loss, cough and haemoptysis. He has never smoked. A chest x-ray showed bilateral pleural plaques throughout both lung fields and a right-sided pleural effusion. The cytology report for the pleural effusion is now available. 

Investigations: 

Cytology report: Abnormal mesothelial cells with positive calretinin staining. Urgent consultant with respiratory physician advised.
