A 74-year-old man presents for review in medical clinic. He is on maximum medical therapy for COPD. He has developed dyspnoea at rest in the last 3 months. Long-term Oxygen therapy is assessment is arranged for him. The ABG on air shows PH 7.4 HCO3 26, PaO2 7.0 PCO2 5.5 . ABG on 1 litre of oxygen shows PH 7.37 HCO3 26, PCO2 5.2, PaO2 9.5.
